- Coccidia is a microscopic single-celled protozoal parasite. It is spread through bird and other animal droppings. Dogs and cats can become infected by walking over contaminated soil and licking their paws and fur afterwards or drinking from a contaminated puddle.
- After it is ingested, this parasite attacks the intestinal lining, destroying the cells and preventing the absorption of nutrients from food. Bloody, watery diarrhea and dehydration may occur due to the amount of water lost.
- Coccidia is highly contagious and unfortunately there are no preventative to help protect against Coccidia. Coccidia can easily be treated once it has been identified.
